Tokyo stocks close higher on large businesses' improved sentiment

Tokyo stocks closed higher Monday as investor sentiment was bolstered by a Bank of Japan survey indicating that sentiment had improved among large businesses and future investments would increase.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 73.97 points, or 0.39 percent, from Friday to close the day at 18,983.23.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, ended 4.43 points, or 0.29 percent higher, at 1,517.03.

Issues that notably advanced into positive territory by the close of play comprised food, fishery, agriculture and forestry, and service issues.

Advancing issues outnumbered declining ones by 1,087 to 804 on the First Section, with trading volume on the main section coming to 2,015.02 million shares, dropping from Friday's volume of 2,222.23 million shares.

The turnover on the first trading day of the week totaled 2,269 billion yen (20.35 billion U.S. dollars). Endit
