UN chief calls for equal rights for people with autism

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Sunday called on international community to recognize the equal rights for persons with autism and give them equal opportunities to play a positive role in societies.
Guterres made the appeal on the occasion of the World Autism Awareness Day which falls on Sunday.
Guterres noted in a message that legal capacity and equal recognition before the law are inherent rights that persons with autism enjoy on an equal basis with other members of the societies.
He asked for necessary support for persons with autism to make their own choices in the exercise if their rights and freedom.
"When they enjoy equal opportunity for self-determination and autonomy, persons with autism will be empowered to make an even stronger positive impact on our shared future," he added.
Autism is a neuro-developmental disorder characterized by impaired social interaction, verbal and non-verbal communication, and restricted and repetitive behavior.
The UN General Assembly designated April 2 as World Autism Awareness Day to highlight the need to help improve the quality of life of those with autism so that can lead full lives as an integral part of society.
The theme for this year's world day is "Toward Autonomy and Self-Determination." Enditem
