Week-long campaign promotes anesthetics

Xinhua, April 2, 2017 Adjust font size:

China has held a week-long campaign to promote awareness of anesthetics.

The campaign from March 27 to April 2 was aimed at promoting knowledge, reducing misunderstanding and easing tension between medical workers and patients, according to the Chinese Medical Association's anesthetics department.

Better knowledge of anesthetics was needed to encourage patient cooperation, said a statement by the department.

"More than 40 million surgeries had been performed nationwide in 2016, and at least 900,000 died after surgery, making such deaths the fourth leading cause of death in hospitals," said Xiong Lize, an anesthesiology expert and a member of the department.

Anesthesia is safe itself. The real challenge is the management in the perioperative period and to lower the rate of post-surgery deaths, according to Xiong.

Yao Shanglong, an anesthesiology expert with Wuhan Union Hospital, said anesthesiologists have a key role in the implementation of safer patient care in perioperative medicine, before, during and after surgery.

"They should be trained to engage in high standard practice in not only anesthesia, but also critical emergency medicine, pain medicine, perioperative medicine and intensive care," Yao said. Endi
