Gas price in Bulgaria jumps nearly 30 pct

Xinhua, March 31, 2017 Adjust font size:

Bulgaria's Energy and Water Regulatory Commission (EWRC) on Friday raised the natural gas price by 29.64 percent to 363.26 BGN (199.4 U.S. dollars) per 1,000 cubic meters, officials sad.

The price hike will come into force on Saturday, and will be effective for the second quarter of this year, EWRC said in a statement.

The Commission regulates the price of natural gas in the country because currently there are no preconditions for the formation of a competitive environment on the natural gas market.

This particular decision of EWRC was conditioned by the increase in prices of alternative fuels on international markets over the past nine months, and the higher exchange rate of the U.S. dollar, the statement said.

Despite the increase, comparative data showed that the price of natural gas in Bulgaria remained lower than the price at the beginning of 2016 when it was 405.56 BGN per 1,000 cubic meters.

Currently, Bulgaria relies on Russia for 96 percent of its gas needs through a single pipeline passing through Ukraine. Endit
