Tokyo stocks close lower on last day of FY 2016

Tokyo stocks closed lower Friday, with the benchmark Nikkei index falling to a seven-week low, as some investors opted to adjust their position on the last day of fiscal year 2016.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 153.96 points, or 0.81 percent, from Thursday to end the day at 18,909.26, marking its lowest close since Feb. 9.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, fell 14.99 points, or 0.98 percent, to finish at 1,512.60.

Issues that notably lost ground by the close of play comprised mining, marine transportation, and fishery, agriculture and forestry-linked stocks and declining issues outpaced advancing ones by 1,677 to 270.

Friday's trading volume on the main section came to 2,222.23 million shares, up from Thursday's volume of 1,849.41 million and the turnover on the final trading day of the week totaled 2,588 billion yen (23.14 billion U.S. dollars). Enditem
