Cuba workers union condemns OAS pressures against Venezuela

Xinhua, March 30, 2017 Adjust font size:

Cuba´s official Workers' Central Union (CTC) issued on Thursday a statement rejecting the "pressures" of the Organization of American States (OAS) against Venezuela, and giving its support to the government of President Nicolas Maduro.

The CTC declares its "unconditional support and internationalist and revolutionary solidarity" with the Venezuelan people and legitimate government of President Nicolás Maduro, according to an article published by the daily "Granma," a major newspaper of ruling Cuban Communist Party.

"We condemn the interference of the OAS Secretary General, Luis Almagro, whose destabilizing actions has encouraged a minority of Venezuelans and representatives of the right wing in our continent, supported by Washington, to implement the Inter-American Democratic Charter against Caracas in order to intervene in its internal affairs," said CTC.

A group of 14 member states of the Washington-based group, headed by Secretary Almagro, issued a joint statement a week ago, urging the government of President Maduro to "outline an electoral schedule and set political prisoners free."

Venezuelan Foreign Minister, Delcy Rodriguez, rejected the joint declarations, with the support of other nations, and qualified Secretary Almagro as "mercenary of the U.S. power elite."

On Wednesday, Cuba´s Foreign Ministry released a statement condemning the OAS attempts against Venezuela and compared the current situation with the events in 1962, when the island was expelled from the continental organization, due to U.S. pressures.

Although the sanction was lifted in 2009, President Raul Castro has declared in many occasions that Cuba will never return to OAS, qualified by his administration as a "ministry of colonies of the U.S. government." Enditem
