Tokyo stocks close lower on concerns for U.S. business policy

Tokyo stocks closed lower Thursday as a weak lead from Wall Street overnight and concerns about U.S. business polices weighed on sentiment and saw investors lock away gains ahead of the end of the fiscal year.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 154.26 points, or 0.8 percent, from Wednesday to close the day at 19,063.22.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, dropped 14.48 points, or 0.94 percent, to finish at 1,527.59.

Issues that retreated into negative territory the most comprised electric power and gas, land transportation, and pulp and paper-linked stocks and declining issues outpaced advancing ones by 1,572 to 338 on the First Section.

On the main section on Thursday trading volume came to 1,849.41 million shares, up from Wednesday's volume of 1,751.40 million shares.

The turnover on the penultimate trading day of the week totaled 2,060 billion yen (18.54 billion U.S. dollars). Endit
