Lithuania to remain important ally for Britain: British ambassador

Xinhua, March 29, 2017 Adjust font size:

Lithuania will remain to a very important friend, ally and partner for Britain despite Brexit, British ambassador to Lithuania Claire Lawrence said on Wednesday.

The ambassador noted that 13th anniversary of Lithuania's accession to NATO was marked on Wednesday and noted that security will remain one of the priority bilateral cooperation areas for Lithuania and Britain.

"The bilateral relationship is getting stronger and stronger. We want to approach the elements of the negotiations concerning the status of Lithuanians in the UK as early as possible," Lawrence underscored.

"Our prime minister aims at a special partnership with the EU that would cover a lot of things also important for Lithuania," she added.

In the area of investments, the two countries have already developed close cooperation and "there is no reason" for this upward trend to abate, she stressed.

On Wednesday, British Prime Minister Theresa May invoked Article 50, the legislation that officially triggers Brexit negotiations process. Enditem
