Slovak Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Gabriela Matecna and Czech Regional Development Minister Karla Slechtova signed a memorandum on cross-border cooperation in Modra, close to the capital on Tuesday.

The new Interreg program, worth 90 million euros (97 million U.S. dollars) has included 253 projects to date with as many as 321 projects supported in the 2007-13 program period.

There is great interest in the joint program, with 250 applications for non-refundable financial benefits submitted at the moment, according to the director general of the Slovak Agriculture Ministry's cross-border section Katarina Mihalova.

She noted the focus will be on education aimed at supporting the labor market, promoting the conservation of natural and cultural heritage, and institutional cooperation between towns and villages.

The new Interreg program between Slovakia and the Czech Republic for the 2014-20 program period is based primarily on the needs of the border territories of both countries. The border between Slovakia and the Czech Republic stretches nearly 252 km. Endit
