Xinhua summary of Asia-Pacific stocks news at 1100 GMT, March 28

Chinese stocks closed lower on Tuesday as the tightening liquidity affected investors' appetite for risk.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index dropped 0.43 percent to close at 3,252.95 points. The smaller Shenzhen index closed 0.18 percent lower at 10,563.29 points.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks closed up 152.17 points, or 0.63 percen, to 24,345.87 points on Tuesday.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 24,274.52 and 24,360. Turnover totaled 69.45 billion Hong Kong dollars (about 8.96 billion U.S. dollars).

PHNOM PENH -- Cambodia's stocks finished lower on Tuesday, with the Cambodia Securities Exchange Index down 1.96 points, or 0.55 percent, to close at 354.51.

A total of 684 shares worth 1.92 million riel (480 U.S. dollars) were traded.

VIENTIANE -- The Lao stock market closed on Tuesday unchanged compared to the previous trading day.

The Lao Securities Exchange composite index remained at 1,065.72 points after closing. A total of 42,900 shares worth about 233 million Lao kip (over 28,524 U.S. dollars) changed hands at the stock market.

TOKYO -- Tokyo stocks closed higher Tuesday recouping losses from a day earlier as the yen's depreciation against the U.S. dollar set a positive tone and investors snapped up issues before turning ex-dividend at the end of the fiscal year.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 217.28 points, or 1.14 percent, from Monday to close at 19,202.87.

HO CHI MINH CITY -- VN-Index, the stock market index of Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City bourse in south Vietnam, closed at 719.26 points on Tuesday, down 4.26 points or 0.59 percent against the previous trading day's closing session.

A total of 78.941 million shares worth 1.638 trillion VND (73.62 million U.S. dollars) were traded on Tuesday.

HANOI -- Stock market index of Vietnam's capital Hanoi, HNX-Index, closed at 90.54 points on Tuesday, down 0.84 points or 0.92 percent against the previous trading session.

Prices of 85 stocks went up, 119 stocks fell down and 76 stocks remained unchanged.

DHAKA -- Bangladesh's DSE (Dhaka Stock Exchange) Broad Index closed Tuesday at 5,737 points, up 39 points from Monday's finish.

Total turnover increased to 9.96 billion taka (about 121 million U.S. dollars) on Tuesday from 7.77 billion taka (about 94.77 million U.S. dollars) on Monday.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore stocks finished higher on Tuesday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) up 30.94 points or 0.99 percent to close at 3,157.82

A total of 2.74 billion shares changed hands with turnover of 1.28 billion Singapore dollars (917.9 million U.S. dollars). Gainers outnumbered losers 321 to 152.

BANGKOK -- The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) index on Tuesday moved up 6.22 points or 0.40 percent to close at 1,576.72 points.

Some 7.88 billion shares worth 38.90 billion baht (about 1.13 billion U.S. dollars) changed hands.

MUMBAI -- The Indian market closed higher Tuesday due to gains from bank shares.

The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex closed at 29,409.52, 172.37 points or 0.6 percent up compared to its previous close at 29,237.15.

MANILA -- The Philippine stock market managed to steal some gains on Tuesday despite the slide in the U.S. equities for the eighth consecutive days.

The bellwether Philippine Stock Exchange gained 1.18 percent or 85.49 points to 7,331.46, while the broader all-share index rose by 0.94 percent or 41.21 points to 4,411.21. Endit
