Along with her team, Zhong began to conduct scientific research into a systematic process for kiwi plants and organic regimes in 1978. Now, the kiwi germplasm center they have built has achieved international recognition and is highly regarded in terms of kiwis of different breeds.

More importantly, the Pujiang-patented kiwifruit varieties are distinguishable from others by a variety of brilliant and very intense fleshes, a more elongated shape, and bigger size and weight.

"Thanks to Dr. Zhong's guidance, both farmers and home gardeners now know all about how to grow and store kiwis in a much more scientific way," said an official from Pujiang. "By connecting contractors and vendors, her team has helped local kiwi suppliers strengthen cross-county cooperation via online and offline marketing."

Twelve key kiwi demonstration gardens across China have been set up in the past decade, covering nine impoverished counties. With Zhong's support, professional training sessions on kiwi planting are offered to more than 6,000 technicians and 42,000 front-line workers.

The cultivated area of the new Chinese breeds of kiwis has reached 14,000 hectares, while the sown area of the kiwis whose processing lines are equipped with new technology is now 45,333 hectares, covering more than 10 provinces. It is forecast that total sales revenues from the area currently under plantation will amount to 10 billion yuan (U.S. $ 1.45 billion) in the next ten years.
