China welcomes reappointment of Azevedo as WTO chief

Xinhua, March 2, 2017 Adjust font size:

China's Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said Thursday it welcomed and supported the reappointment of Roberto Azevedo as director-general of the World Trade Organization (WTO) for a second term.

WTO members agreed to appoint Azevedo for another four years on Tuesday.

During his first term, Azevedo was committed to multilateral trade systems, trade negotiations and increasing the WTO voice in global economic governance, MOC spokesperson Sun Jiwen said at a press conference.

China hopes Azevedo will lead the WTO to advance globalization, stand firm against protectionism and protect the interests of developing countries including China, Sun said.

There will be no change to China's support for the WTO, he said, adding that China will continue to contribute to multilateral trade systems and improvement of global governance, he said. Endi
