1st LD: Taliban key commander detained, 3 killed in N. Afghan province

A Taliban key commander Qari Bahaudin was arrested and three of his men killed in clash for control Tala-o-Barfak district of northern Baghlan province, police spokesman for the northern region Mahfozullah Akbari said Wednesday.

"Taliban rebels launched series of attacks against government interests in Tala-o-Barfak district couple of days ago and security forces retaliated, As a result, the notorious commander Qari Bahaudin was arrested early today and three of his men were killed," Akbari told reporters here.

Qari Bahaudin was the military in charge of Taliban for Baghlan for the northern Baghlan province and his arrest could prove a major setback for the insurgents,the official asserted.

The official also confirmed that two police personnel sustained injuries in the fighting which has been continuing in parts of the restive district.

Taliban militants who have been challenging government forces in parts of Baghlan province with Pul-e-Khumri as its capital 160 km north of Kabul haven't commented.

Sporadic fighting, according to officials, has been continuing between government forces and Taliban militants in Dand-e-Ghori, Doshi and parts of Tala-o-Barfak districts of Baghlan province over the past couple of days. Endit
