10 die as bus falls in between two flyovers over a canal in southern India

Xinhua, February 28, 2017 Adjust font size:

At least 10 people were killed and more than 30 others injured when a private passenger bus went off the roads and fell in between two flyovers over a canal in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh Tuesday, a senior police official said.

"The mishap happened near the state's Vijayawada district in the morning when the bus was on its way to the southern city of Hyderabad from the neighboring eastern Indian state of Odisha's capital Bhubaneswar," he said, on condition of anonymity.

While 10 people were killed on the spot, those injured have been admitted to Nandigama Government Hospital, the official said, adding that the death toll could go up later in the day as condition of some of the injured passengers are said to be serious.

Local TV channels showed footage of the ill-fated bus trapped in between the two flyovers over a canal and rescuers using gass cutters to pull out the passengers from the vehicle.

Eye-witnesses told police that the incident happened as the driver of the bus fell asleep on the wheels and lost control of the vehicle. "However, a probe has been ordered to ascertain the exact cause of the mishap," the police official said.

More than 130,000 people die in road accidents in India every year, according to official figures. Poor road condition and rash driving are the two major causes of road accidents in the country. Endit
