Pet dog taken by bull shark on Australian beach

People have been warned not to enter the water at an Australian beach on Tuesday, after a pet dog was attacked and taken by a shark late on Sunday.

The attack happened on Sydney's Kurnell Beach, a popular surfing and tourist destination, with reports suggesting a bull shark was the culprit, with the animals known for their aggressive tendencies.

A spokesperson for the local Sutherland Shire Council issued a warning to people who visit the idyllic beach, and sent extra council lifeguards to patrol the shoreline.

"NSW Department of Primary Industries advises people to avoid swimming or surfing when it is dark, or during twilight hours," the council said.

The attack comes as a swimmer was bitten by a bull shark on the other side of the country on Saturday, in Coral Bay in Western Australia.

The incident, not reported until Monday, occurred when the woman was snorkelling 20 metres off the shore at the popular tourist spot.

The woman was treated for minor injuries, and needed stitches on her hand due to the shark bite. Endit
