At least two pupils have confirmed dead and two others sustained injuries in a mortar mine attack on a school in the eastern Laghman province on Saturday.

The mortar mine was fired by anti-government militants, spokesman for the provincial government Sarhadi Zawak told reporters.

It hit the school outside provincial capital Mehtarlam, killing two innocent students on the spot and injuring two others including a student and a teacher, he said.

The gruesome incident occurred at around 11:00 a.m. local time and those injured have been taken to hospital for medical treatment, the official added without giving more details.

Taliban militants who are active in parts of the Laghman province have yet to claim responsibility. Endit
