Tourism on upward trend in Namibia: Association

The Hospitality Association of Namibia said Thursday that 2016 will go down in history as one of the most successful and positive tourism years for the country.

According to a statement the association sent out, tourism accommodation properties recorded nearly 60 percent occupancy across the country and throughout the year.

Lodges, tented lodges and guest houses seem to be the most popular accommodation facilities throughout Namibia, but hotels fared almost equally well, the statement said.

Although the submissions are not inclusive of all businesses and properties available in the country, the association said the processed report is a very good indicator of tourism performance.

One of the most visited areas, according to the association, is Namibia's coastal town of Swakopmund (about 350 kilometers from Windhoek) that recorded an average growth of 62 percent last year.

The statement also said the upward trend continued in January where an increase of 45 percent in occupancy was recorded as compared to that of 2016.

The association said the figures are based on the monthly submissions made by its members' occupancy figures.

"The tourism industry is proud of the results achieved, which comes after hard work and substantial investment in international marketing efforts, as well as input in infrastructure and training in the industry," the statement said. Endit
