Indonesia pledges to reduce plastic waste

The Indonesian government will try to trim onshore and offshore plastic waste as an effort to preserve the environment, a government minister said Thursday.

Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Martime Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said the government has set a target of a 70-percent decline of the figure within eight years.

A number of strategies and plans have been set up to reduce plastic waste, including the allocation of 1 billion U.S. dollars per year to finance the measure, he added.

"Today, we launch a campaign to shrink the number of plastic waste. By the end of 2025, we will reduce it by 70 percent," the minister said in a statement.

He said plastic waste is dangerous for marine animals, sea birds and coral reefs.

Plastic waste also brings disadvantages to the country's tourism sector, he added.

Indonesia is an archipelago country home to over 17,500 islands. Endit
