Czech police detain 17 people for smuggling drugs to prison

Czech Police on Monday detained 17 people, including five prisoners, over smuggling drugs into a prison in Bytiz near Pribram, Pribram police spokeswoman Monika Schindlova said on Wednesday.

On Monday, 130 police officers and more than 100 prison staff conducted the raids. If found guilty, those detained could face up to 10 years in jail, said Schindlova.

Schindlova said it was "extensive and organised drug crime activity."

The masterminds were two prisoners aged 41 and 43 years who conducted their business through a mobile phone.

In addition to the prisoners, their acquaintances, relations or friends are among the arrested.

Over the last few months, the group attempted to smuggle at least 1,200 pills and marijuana to the prison. A considerable part of addictive substances was found by the guards in the parcels for the prisoners and in their checks.

Schindlova said the police on Tuesday accused 17 people, including five women, of the unauthorized production and handling of narcotics. Endit
