Vietnamese capital to launch second rapid bus route

Xinhua, February 22, 2017 Adjust font size:

The Department of Transport in Vietnam's capital has proposed launching a second Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) route after the first one made debut in late 2016.

The second route will connect Lang-Hoa Lac hi-tech zone in suburban Hanoi and downtown Kim Ma street, the department deputy director Ngo Manh Tuan told the state-run news agency VNA on Wednesday.

The second BRT is expected to be put into operation in the second quarter of 2017, according to Tuan.

The first BRT, put into use on the last day of 2016, has triggered mixed reactions from the public. However, according to the official, the first BRT has proven effective and gained public support.

Statistics show that during the January 2017, the first month of operation, the first BRT of Hanoi transported 375,700 person-times of passengers.

The Hanoi BRT project started in 2013 at a cost of 53.6 million U.S. dollars, financed through World Bank loans. The city plans to run eight BRT routes by 2030. Endit
