The European Council on Monday approved a proposal to strengthen cooperation between national authorities for the enforcement of consumer protection laws.
On May 25, 2016, the European Commission put forward a proposal for the reform of the consumer protection cooperation (CPC) regulation, which governs the powers of enforcement authorities and the manner in which they can cooperate.
The aim to revise CPC is to address the need to better enforce the European Union (EU) consumer law, especially in the fast evolving digital sphere, the body said in a statement.
The revision of the existing CPC would give more powers to national authorities. For example, according to the Council's statement, they can check if websites geo-block consumers, order the immediate take-down of websites hosting scams or request information from domain registrars and banks to detect the identity of the responsible trader.
"Ineffective enforcement of cross-border infringements, in particular in the digital environment, enables traders to evade enforcement by relocating within the bloc," said the statement. Enditem
