Indonesia targets 8th position in Asian Games 2018

Xinhua, February 20, 2017 Adjust font size:

The Indonesian government has expected the country to post 8th to 10th rank in the Asian Games next year with 15 gold medals, a minister disclosed here on Monday.

"The target in the Asian Games 2018 is rank 8 or 10. It is required 15 gold medals for the position," Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Affairs Puan Maharani said.

Still, Puan was optimistic that Indonesian athletes could achieve more gold medals that would lead the target improving.

As the host of the upcoming regional sport gala, Indonesia has made a lot of preparation.

"Indonesia wants both the success of the event and the success of the athletes' achievement," she said.

The Asian Games 2018 will be held in Indonesia's capital and Palembang city of South Sumatra Province from August. 18 to September 2.

Indonesian athletes will vie in 44 sports, according to the country's sport minister Imam Nahrawi.

Indonesia was awarded to host the Games in September 2014, following the withdrawal of original host Vietnam due to economic reason. Endit
