At least 25 children were injured when their school bus overturned and rolled into a ditch in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh Friday.

"The mishap happened when the driver lost control of the bus while trying to overtake another bus and skidded off the road near Dehar in the state's Mandi district. After the vehicle skidded off, it turned turtle and then fell into a ditch," a senior police official said.

Apart from the driver and a helper, some 30 school children were on board the bus that on its way from Samlog village to Vivekananda Public School in Dehar.

"Some 25 children and the driver of the bus sustained injuries and have been admitted to a state-run hospital. Out of 25, at least 12 suffered fractures but they are said to be out of danger," the police official said.

The state government has announced a relief of 5,000 rupees (75 U.S. dollars) for each of the 25 children, apart from providing them free treatment.
