The following are news items in South African major news outlets on Wednesday:

-- Almost 70 percent of South Africans feel unsafe at night, even though their experiences of crime have declined, Statistician General Pali Lehohla said Tuesday.

"The crime, although declining in their experiences, is probably not reaching the threshold where they feel safe and secure," said Lehohla. (News24)

-- A 22-year-old South African man from Durban has been killed in Syria.

This is according to social activist Yusuf Abramjee who tweeted on Tuesday that the man's family has confirmed the death. Circumstances surrounding his killing are still unclear.(South African Broadcasting Corporation)

-- The Department of Energy said on Tuesday it would do a modelling on renewable energy in an unconstrained scenario as an electricity generation option.

Briefing Parliament's Standing Committee on Energy about the updated Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), the department's chief director Jacob Mbele said renewable energy would be considered without constraints to test how readily it would be available as part of South Africa's energy mix. (Fin24) Endit
