A cargo ship whose nationality is Panama caught fire while docking at Cai Lan port in Vietnam's northern Quang Ninh province late Tuesday. No casualties have been reported, said local authorities on Wednesday.

Ta Quang Viet, deputy chief of Cai Lan port, said on Vietnam's state-run news agency VNA that the flame erupted suddenly in the bedroom cabin of the ship's chief engineer.

No one was in the cabin at that time. As soon as learning about the incident, the crew members used hoses to put out the fire.

Local firefighters and the port's special fire-fighting boat also got to the site and the fire was extinguished after 25 minutes.

Hoang Van Hoan, head of safety and maritime inspection of port authorities in Quang Ninh province, some 120 km east of capital Hanoi, said the ship with payload of four tons, arrived at the port at around 23:30 on Monday (1630 GMT).

The ship caught fire while loading woodchips to export to Japan, reported VNA, adding that there are 23 crew members on board, all of whom are Chinese.

Local authorities are working to look for the cause of the flame which caused no casualties. The property damage is under verification. Endit
