Vietnam's vegetable, fruit exports rise 14 pct in January

Vietnam's vegetable and fruit exports in January 2017 rose 14 percent year-on-year to reach 230 million U.S. dollars, according to the General Statistics Office on Tuesday.

Last year, the sector earned about 2.5 billion U.S. dollars in exports, posting a growth of 30 percent from 2015, surpassing that of other key agricultural products like rice, peppercorn and rubber, said Vietnam Fruit and Vegetables Association.

In 2017, the sector expects an export turnover of 3 billion U.S. dollars, Vietnam's state-run news agency VNA quoted the association as saying on Tuesday.

Local experts predict that exports of fruit and vegetables, especially fruit, will surge by three or four times in the near future.

In 2016, about 70 percent of Vietnamese fruit and vegetable products were shipped to China, compared to 65 percent in 2015 and 30 percent in 2014, respectively.

Duong Phuong Thao, deputy head of the Department of Import and Export under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, said that in order to achieve sustainable growth in the sector, quality of Vietnamese vegetable and fruit must be improved, with increasing investment in post-harvest storage and processing and building trademarks to attract more consumers, reported VNA.
