China hopes U.S.to properly handle issues regarding Taiwan: FM spokesperson

Xinhua, February 10, 2017 Adjust font size:

China on Friday expressed hope that the United States could properly handle issues regarding Taiwan, so that the overall cooperation between the two countries is not affected.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang made the remarks at a routine press conference when asked to comment on a telephone conversation between President Xi Jinping and his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump earlier Friday.

During the phone conversation, Trump said he fully understands the high significance of the U.S. government's pursuit of the one-China policy, adding that the U.S. government adheres to the one-China policy.

Xi said he appreciated Trump's stressing that the U.S. government adheres to the one-China policy, adding that the policy is the political basis of China-U.S. relations.

Sound political interaction is of crucial importance to the healthy and stable development of China-U.S. ties, Lu told the briefing.

The long-term, healthy and stable development of China-U.S. relations not only serves the fundamental interest of the two peoples but also chimes with the aspiration of the international community, said Lu.

China is ready to work with the United States to enhance communication and expand cooperation, said Lu.

Reiterating the principles of non-conflict, non-confrontation, mutual respect and win-win cooperation, Lu said China looked forward to enhancing exchanges with the U.S. and expanding cooperation at the bilateral, regional and global levels.

In their phone conversation, the first since Trump took office in January, Xi and Trump pledged to boost win-win cooperation in a variety of areas and develop a constructive China-U.S. relationship. Endi
