Trump talks with Afghan president on telephone

Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and U.S. President Donald Trump talked on the telephone Thursday night and discussed several issues including war against terrorism and extremism, the Afghan presidential palace said Friday.

The two leaders discussed different topics including security situation in Afghanistan, Afghan development and investment, economic affairs, and the fight against terrorism, the palace said in a statement.

"They also discussed cooperation between the two nations which is based on shared interests and risks," the statement added.

Ghani told his U.S. counterpart that Afghan National Security Forces, which have passed a difficult stage after taking full security responsibilities from U.S. and NATO forces, were ready to defend their country.

The two leaders also stressed their beliefs in the strategic relations between Kabul and Washington, the statement said.

During the conversation, Trump said he will meet President Ghani soon, the statement noted, saying the two sides agreed that working teams of the two countries will work on discussed issues between the two leaders and try to facilitate the meeting between them. Endit
