Athletic Club Bilbao announced on Thursday that its 21-year-old central defender Yeray Alvarez, who underwent an operation to a tumor removed, signed a new contract to remain in Bilbao till the end of June 2022.

"It seems as if everything has happened in a short space of time, both bad and good, but I am going to think about the good things and I am very happy," said Yeray on the Athletic Club website.

On Dec. 23, 2016, Yeray was diagnosed with testicular cancer and four days later he underwent the operation.

Less than three weeks later he began training again after it was confirmed he would not need any further treatment and last Saturday he returned to action as Athletic faced FC Barcelona in the Camp Nou Stadium.

Yeray, who is tipped as a future Spain international, said, "I feel really good and happy to have renewed my contract with the club. After everything that has happened and the support I have received from the fans, my team-mates and my family, the fact that everything has turned out well makes it even better." Enditem
