Two people were killed when the light aircraft they were travelling in crashed close to the town of Orgaz in the province of Toledo to the south of Madrid on Wednesday afternoon, local media reported on Thursday.

The aircraft crashed close to the Villaverde airport where it was due to land and caught fire on impact, killing the two aboard who have been described by authorities as "a couple in their 40s".

Emergency services, including Civil Guards and an emergency medical team, rushed to the site quickly, but could do nothing to save them.

The causes of the crash were not known. Director of Operations at Villaverde, Luis Ramos commented that "it looked like it could be a mechanical fault."

The authorities have begun to investigate the cause of the accident. Endit
