Disused missile facility in Latvia being demolished

Xinhua, February 7, 2017 Adjust font size:

The demolition of a disused Soviet-time military site that once served as a storage and launch facility for nuclear missiles is under way in Galgauska in the eastern Latvian municipality of Gulbene, local media reported Monday.

According to Latvia's public media website lsm.lv, Demontaza.lv company has won the right to dismantle the abandoned military base Dvina R12, which consists of four 32-meters deep underground missile silos and a multi-level missile launch control center.

The plan is to dismantle the structure and recycle its concrete parts into crushed concrete.

Demontaza.lv plans to complete the job in six months for 189,906 euros.

Dvina R12, which was used for storing four nuclear missiles, now remains the last undemolished facility of this type in Latvia. (1 euro = 1.07 U.S. dollars) Endit
