Xinhua, February 4, 2017 Adjust font size:

Iran launched a homegrown oceangoing research vessel in the southern port city of Bandar Abbas on Saturday, Tasnim news agency reported.

The ship, named Kavoshgare Khalij Fars, or Persian Gulf explorer, is capable of sailing 3,000 nautical miles (over 5,500 km), with a length of 50 meters, a beam of 10 meters and a draft of four meters, the report said.

The vessel, which cost about 8.5 million U.S. dollars to build, can travel at 15 knots (27.7 km/h) and is capable of sailing 45 days non-stop.

The country's first oceangoing ship, Iran-Arak, produced in 2009, weighs over 7,000 tons and is capable of carrying over 2,200 TEU, or 30,000 tons of cargo.

The second homemade oceangoing cargo ship, named Iran Shahr-E-Kord, was launched in 2014. With a length of 187 meters and a width of 30 meters, the ship has the capacity to carry 2,200 containers. Endit
