Cha Minkyu of South Korea claimed his second gold medal of the 28th Winter Universiade when he won the men's 1000-meter speed skating final here on Friday.
Cha had a rusty start but soon surged back after 600 meters, winning in one minutes 9.56 seconds, only 0.24 seconds shy of the Universiade record.
He also won the men's 500 meters race in the world famous Medeu High Mountain Ice Rink in Almaty.
Martijn Renier Van Oosten from the Netherlands clocked 1:10.12 to take the silver medal while Kosaka Ryu of Japan came third with 1:10.58.
The competition started in fogs but by the end of the competition the weather got better. Van Oosten, who earlier won the silver medal in 1,500 meters, said that the weather influenced the performance of all athletes.
"Of course, it would be desirable if the sun was shining, but all the athletes were in the same conditions and it was fair. It's my best result of the season, and, in fact, it is very high," said Van Oosten.
China's Zhang Hongqiang ranked 15th with 1:11.94. Endit
