U.S. stocks open lower amid fall of jobless claims

U.S. stocks opened lower Thursday as Wall Street digested the country's initial jobless claims data and corporate earnings reports.

In the week ending Jan. 28, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial jobless claims was 246,000, a drop of 14,000 from the previous week's revised level, the Labor Department announced Thursday.

The four-week moving average was 248,000, an increase of 2,250 from the previous week's revised average.

In corporate news, shares of Facebook Inc. jumped over 2 percent in early trading on Thursday, after the social media networking website delivered stronger-than-expected fourth-quarter results.

Meanwhile, investors were still sifting through the Federal Reserve's decision to keep interest rates unchanged at 0.5-0.75 percent.

Shortly after the opening bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 32.95 points, or 0.17 percent, to 19,857.99. The S&P 500 lost 4.12 points, or 0.18 percent, to 2,275.43. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 15.07 points, or 0.27 percent, to 5,627.58. Endi
