Latvian, Polish parliament speakers call for EU unity on issues of security, future

It is essential for all EU member states to maintain unity when making decisions on issues on the bloc'security and future, Latvian parliament speaker Inara Murniece and her Polish counterpart Marek Kuchcinski agreed here on Wednesday.

The EU must continue to develop as a bloc of independent states, the officials said.

According to the Latvian parliamentary press service, Murniece noted the necessity to move ahead faster to deal with issues like immigration.

Security and defense are central to Latvian-Polish cooperation, Murniece noted, adding that both countries are close allies and Poland is one of Latvia's key partners in NATO.

Murniece thanked for Poland's contribution to ensuring Latvia's security through participation in the NATO-led airspace policing mission in the Baltics and NATO's multinational battalion, as well as readiness to send troops to the Baltic states.

Both Murniece and Kuchcinski agreed that the two countries' cooperation in the EU and NATO is especially important.

Latvia and Poland enjoy dynamic ties, including on the parliamentary level, the Latvian speaker said. Endit
