Number of unemployed people in Germany rises to almost 2.8 mln in January

Xinhua, February 1, 2017 Adjust font size:

The number of unemployed people in Germany rose to nearly 2.8 million in January, after a record low level of unemployment in 2016, official data showed on Tuesday.

The number of unemployed people increased in January 2017 by 209,000 from the previous month to 2.78 million, raising the German unemployment rate by 0.5 percentage point to 6.3 percent, data from the German Federal Employment Agency showed.

Compared with the number in January 2016, the figure of unemployed people in January 2017 was down by 143,000.

"The labor market has started well into the new year. The number of unemployed people has risen in January alone for seasonal reasons. Seasonally-adjusted, there was a decline," said Frank-Juergen Weise, head of the agency.

In 2016, 2.69 million people were registered as unemployed on average in Germany, the first time for the number of unemployed people to fall below the 2.7 million mark since 1991. Endit
