The unemployment rate in Italy remained at 12 percent in December 2016, essentially unchanged over the previous month, the Italian Institute of Statistics (ISTAT) said on Tuesday.
Some 3.1 million Italians were jobless overall, marking a 0.3-percent increase compared with Nov. 2016, ISTAT added. The employment rate was 57.3 percent, and the inactivity rate was 34.8 percent, both unchanged from the month before.
Unemployment among youth aged 15 to 24, however, again exceeded the threshold of 40 percent.
More specifically, the youth jobless rate reached 40.1 percent in December, with a 0.2-percent rise over the previous month, according to ISTAT. It was the highest level since June 2015.
More positive were the job market trends on an annual basis. The number of employed people rose by 1.1 percent, or 242,000, in December 2016 from December 2015.
The upward trend was mainly due to an increase in employed staff, including some 111,000 permanent contracts, and 155,000 fix-term contracts, ISTAT said. Enditem
