Data analysis to curb smuggling in Nigeria: minister

Xinhua, January 27, 2017 Adjust font size:

Effective use of data analysis would help curb smuggling in Nigeria, Minister of Finance Kemi Adeosun said Thursday.

Speaking at the 2017 International Customs Day celebration in Abuja, the minister said the government will introduce a single window for data across various sectors and agencies to curb revenue leakages in the country.

The minister stressed the importance of data for effective border management in the most populous nation in Africa.

"The effective use of data in the daily operations of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) will help facilitate trade with other partner countries and boost the GDP of Nigeria," she said.

According to her, data sharing among other agencies are necessary and important to curb revenue leakages.

"Efforts are now in full swing to introduce a single window for data across the various sectors and agencies," she told the audience.

The minister said this is an important milestone for the country, as it has been an uphill task to get agencies to collaborate and to focus on a singular and harmonize set of data.

"I believe this will make a lot of difference," she said. Endit
