Ghanaian students celebrate Chinese Spring Festival

Over 1,000 Ghanaian students from the capital's junior high schools on Wednesday performed Chinese songs and dances to celebrate the Spring Festival.

The event, hosted by the Confucius Institute at the University of Ghana Basic Schools, Legon, was attended by officials from the Chinese Embassy and Chinese company representatives.

The Chinese Ambassador to Ghana Sun Baohong said close cultural exchanges and cooperation had become a strong driving force for the development of Ghana-China relations.

She hoped the Confucius Institute would keep promoting the outstanding Chinese culture and assimilating the excellent Ghanaian cultural achievements to push for its localization, thus fitting the institute into the role of inter-civilization envoy.

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana Ebenezer Oduro Owusu encouraged the students to at least learn one foreign language, including Chinese.

"It is after you walk into the world of business or into the world of this life that you realize how important it is to have, for example, Chinese language as a second language," he said.

During the even, students from the Confucius Institute also displayed their proficiency in spoken Chinese language and knowledge of Chinese music, dance and traditional outfit.

Spring Festival, or Chinese Lunar New Year, is the most important festival for China, which falls on Jan. 28 this year. Enditem
