1st LD Writethru: Helicopter with six people on aboard crashes in central Italy

Xinhua, January 24, 2017 Adjust font size:

A helicopter with six people for emergency services on board crashed Tuesday in the province of L'Aquila, central Italy, according to Ansa news agency.

The report confirmed the deaths of several people but did not give a specific number, citing sources from Carabinieri police and Alpine rescuers on the scene.

The helicopter was in the process of taking an injured person from a piste at the Campo Felice ski resort, Ansa said.

According to local media reports, the helicopter came down from a height of around 600 meters. It was engaged in an ordinary rescue operation and was not being used for the emergency caused by the recent wave of snow and the fresh earthquakes in central Italy.

The helicopter was not used for rescue operations after an avalanche hit the Hotel Rigopiano in the Abruzzo mountains on Wednesday last week, Ansa added. Endit
