About 250 arrested in operations targeting at pistols trafficking: Europol

Nearly 250 people arrested in operations targeting pistols illegally trafficking in Europe in 2016, the European Police Office (Europol) said in a press release Monday.

Based upon intelligence provided by Europol, a series of international actions have been launched in 10 European Union members, including Romania, Greece, Belgium, the Netherlands and Poland.

These countries agreed to investigate the acquisition of pistols by their nationals, which were manufactured in Turkey and illegally trafficked into Europe.

According to their legislation, a declaration or authorization is required to acquire, import and possess such a firearm.

During the actions, nearly 556 pistols, over 33,000 rounds of ammunition, and other illegal commodities were seized.

In Spain, at least four illicit workshops for the conversion of weapons and the production of ammunition were dismantled.

According to Europol, in recent years, pistols have become extremely popular among criminals and have been represented in considerable figures in firearm trafficking. Endit
