Austrian armed forces to invest 200 mln euros on modernization in 2017

The Austrian Armed Forces is to invest about 200 million euros (212 million U.S. dollars) on modern equipment and machinery in 2017, Austria Press Agency reported on Thursday.

The investments are to include the purchase of 40 ATF Dingo infantry mobility vehicles costing a total of 51 million euros, as well as 34 Pandur armoured personnel carriers, costing 48.5 million euros.

Other investments will include upgrades to Husar light multirole vehicles, as well as to Blackhawk helicopters and Hercules transport aircraft.

The equipment of soldiers will also be upgraded, including their helmets, headsets, goggles and other items.

Defense Minister Hans Peter Doskozil said the high amount of domestic involvement in the investments will benefit Austrian workers and the national economy.

In addition, he said the military spending cutbacks of previous years have led to a backlog of needed investments, which needs to be caught up with to modernize the armed forces.(1 euro = 1.06 U.S. dollars) Endit
