A five-month-old infant died during a domestic violence incident on Crete island, police announced on Thursday.
The boy who succumbed to the heavy injuries he allegedly suffered from his 52-year-old father was one of the 1,000 cases of children abuse reported on average annually in recent years in Greece, according to Greek police.
The infant was transferred to a hospital in Herakleion city by neighbors who were alerted by his 30-year-old mother.
The victim's father was arrested.
The woman told police that her intoxicated husband attacked her while she was holding her child.
About 24 percent of women in Greece since the age of 15 have experienced physical violence, according to a 2014 survey of the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights. Most cases (19 percent) concern domestic violence.
During 2016, the Smile of the Child, a Greek NGO defending children's right over the past two decades, received 717 complaints for serious abuse against minors.
The 38 percent of the cases concerned infants and children up to 6 years old. In 92.5 percent of the cases the children were abused by their parents. Endit
