Nigeria seeks Burundi's support for post at AU

A special envoy of Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari Wednesday met with Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza and requested Burundi's support for the post of African Union (AU) Commissioner for Peace and Security.

"I am a holder of a message from Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari. Nigeria has a candidate for the post of AU Commissioner for Peace and Security and Burundi has a candidate as well. We (Nigeria) want support from Burundi for that post," the special envoy of the Nigerian president, also the west African country's Foreign Affairs Minister Geoffrey Onyeama, told reporters after meeting Nkurunziza.

Onyeama underlined that Buhari's priority areas include peace and security, good governance and economy.

He said, "We believe that there are many conflicts in Africa, but we are ready to address them."

He indicated that on top of two candidatures from Burundi and Nigeria, there is also a candidature from Algeria that has already occupied the post for 16 years.

"We want mutual support during the election. If Nigeria has more chances to win, we are requesting Burundi to support us, and on the contrary, if Burundi has more chances to win, we will support Burundi," Onyeama said. Endit
