Kenya's electoral body decries low voter registration turnout

Xinhua, January 18, 2017 Adjust font size:

Kenya's electoral body on Wednesday decried the low voter registration turnout by potential voters since the exercise began on Monday.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) CEO Ezra Chiloba told journalists in Nairobi that the poll agency needs to register at least 200,000 voters per day in order to reach its target of enlisting 6 million new voters at the end of the 30-day exercise

"Unfortunately we are only managing to enlist 94,000 voters per day. We are therefore appealing to all potential voters to register so that they take part in the upcoming general elections slated for August," Chiloba said.

He noted that a few hitches on the biometric voter registration kits were also experienced.

The polls body has also stepped up voter education to ensure that people understand the voter registration process.

The CEO said that the current voter registration exercise will not be extended due to the tight schedule required for the preparations of the elections. Endit
