Three suspects have been detained after the killing of a former Kenyan international rugby player on Sunday night on the outskirts of Nairobi.
According to local Citizen Digital, the local club Homeboyz RFC forward Andrew Wekesa who played for the nation's U-19 side in 2011 died in hospital after being stabbed on the chest by one of the three assailants after a brawl outside an entertainment joint.
The Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD) in Mlolongo where the incident happened, Sharma Wario confirmed Tuesday the player was in the company of another man when an argument ensued between him and another group before a fight broke out and it spilled into the street.
Wario said one of the three suspects then went into a vehicle and emerged with what is believed to be a screwdriver after the well built rugby ace subdued them before stabbing Wekesa in the chest.
The player was then rushed to a nearby hospital.
"Police officers on patrol were alerted and they apprehended them," Wario said.
Investigations into the incident are underway with Wekesa, 25, only recently graduating from the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.
He is the third local rugby player to pass on in just over a month following the deaths of Victor Wayodi who played for Mwamba RFC and Ogeto Gacheo of Nondescripts RFC who died from injuries sustained on the pitch. Endit
