Indian son defeats father over Uttar Pradesh's party symbol

Xinhua, January 17, 2017 Adjust font size:

Ahead of the election in Uttar Pradesh, Indian election commission has declared Akhilesh Yadav as the rightful owner of Samajwadi Party's symbol, the bicycle, officials said Tuesday.

The commission on Monday evening rejected Akhilesh's father Mulayam Singh Yadav's claim to the party's symbol. The commission made the decision after observing that the majority of legislators in Samajwadi Party back Akhilesh over his father.

Akhilesh became the chief minister in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh in 2012. After paving way for his son, the 77-year-old senior Yadav, who founded the party 25 years ago, was elevated to the position of party patriarch.

However, an infighting broke out between the father and son, resulting in bifurcation of party between their loyalists.

The feud came into open when Akhilesh sought a second consecutive term. Both father and son filed competing claims earlier this month with the commission to use the party name and symbol.

Elections in Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state, will be held in five phases from Feb. 11 to March 8.

Akhilesh's faction submitted individual affidavits of the party's lawmakers and organizational wings in support of the claim. However, Mulayam Singh didn't file any affidavits to the commission to prove his claim. Endit
