Tokyo shares opened lower on Tuesday with the Nikkei index falling to its lowest intraday level in five weeks, as investors kept cautious ahead of British Prime Minister Theresa May's speech on Britain's plans to exit the European Union due later in the day.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 153.45 points, or 0.80 percent, from Monday to 18,941.79.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange decreased 12.78 points, or 0.83 percent, to 1,517.86.
