Afghan parliament approves national budget

Xinhua, January 16, 2017 Adjust font size:

Afghan lawmakers on Monday approved a 429-billion-afghani (around 6.4 billion U.S. dollars) national budget for 1396 fiscal year on the Persian calendar.

The 1396 fiscal year began on Dec. 21, 2016 and ends on Dec. 21, 2017.

"Afghanistan's Wolesi Jirga (Lower House of parliament) in a session today unanimously approved the budget for fiscal year 1396," the Afghan Finance Ministry said in a statement on Monday.

"Afghan Finance Minister Eklil Hakimi... asked all budget units to make effective usage of the budget with all their potential and facilities on-time for the benefit of the country," said the statement.

The budget has been amended by the government recently after it was rejected by lawmakers on the ground of being imbalanced.

Of the total amount of the budget, 268.4 billion afghani will be allocated for ordinary budget, while 161 billion (afghani) for development budget, the statement said.

Thirty-eight percent of the budget will be funded by national resources and the remaining will come from donor assistance, it said. (1 U.S. dollar = 67 afghani) Endit
