Fire breaks out in Bangladesh's top medical university, no casualties

A fire broke out on Saturday morning in Bangladesh's largest Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) in the capital, with no immediate reports of casualties.

A police official said smoke was noticed on the first floor of a building of the BSMMU complex, formerly known as PG hospital, as the fire broke out .

The fire razed the underground of a building in the Cabin Block area of the hospital located near Dhaka's key intersection Shahbagh, destroying valuable goods and documents, said the official who did not like to be named .

He said the fire originated at around 11:20 a.m. (local time) Saturday.

He said several units of firefighters doused the fire at about 12:15 p.m. local time .

No casualties have so far been reported.

The exact cause of the fire was unknown so far.

BSMMU is the first and only medical university in Bangladesh and considered one of the zenith medical varsities in the South Asia. Besides education, the university plays the vital role of promoting research activities in various discipline of medicine. Since its inception, the university, with 1500 beds has also been delivering general and specialized clinical service as a tertiary level healthcare center. Endit
